The sensation of hearing ringing in the ears, often referred to as tinnitus, has intrigued & mystified individuals across cultures & ages. Beyond its medical implications, this phenomenon carries a rich tapestry of spiritual significance for many. While acknowledging the potential medical causes of tinnitus (which ideally will be confirmed by a medical doctor), various spiritual traditions offer other interpretations of this experience and delve into its possible deeper metaphysical implications.

It is also interesting to note that approximately 80–90% of people diagnosed with tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss, so if you do not have any hearing loss, consider the following.

In the realm of spirituality, ringing (or buzzing) in the ears is often seen as more than just a medical condition called tinnitus. It can be considered a “sound’ from the universe, cosmos or higher spiritual realms connecting all life forms to the divine source. From a spiritual perspective you, are connecting with the divine, and it is a sign that the individual is tuning in to higher frequencies or spiritual energies.

In the Sant Mat tradition, which is deeply rooted in the philosophy of inner spiritual experiences and meditation, such sensations are considered a form of celestial music often called, ‘Sound Current’, ‘Music of the Spheres’ or the divine melody reverberating within. Link to Sant Mat philosophy information: https://rssb.org/index.html

Sant Mat emphasizes the importance of inner meditation and connecting with the inner sound and holds the belief that the ringing in the ears is an echo of the divine sound or “Shabd, or in biblical terms ‘The Word’ and is deeply revered and considered a pivotal aspect of the journey towards spiritual awakening and self-realisation.

This inner sound is believed to be present in every being and connects them to the divine source. Meditation practitioners consider this phenomenon as an invitation to turn inward, to listen attentively to this divine symphony, and to journey deeper into their spiritual selves. By listening intently to this inner sound, it is seen as a ‘guide’ that leads the practitioner towards higher states of consciousness and spiritual evolution.

In many spiritual traditions, it is strongly suggested that the seeker of spiritual truths should have a spiritual guide, often called a Guru, Master, or Spiritual Teacher, to avoid any pitfalls and to learn the correct meditation techniques. You can specifically listen to the ‘inner sounds’ by meditating on the third-eye chakra with a specific mantra given to you by your spiritual guide.
Third Eye Chakra – 5th: dynamic meditation portal to spiritual realms

It is essential to approach the experience of ringing in the ears with a balanced perspective that encompasses both spiritual and medical dimensions. Medically, tinnitus can stem from numerous factors such as exposure to loud noises, ear infections, or underlying health conditions. It is crucial to consult medical professionals to rule out any physiological causes that may require attention or treatment. Sometimes, the spiritual and medical realms can intersect, highlighting the importance of holistic well-being.

For those on a spiritual journey, the ringing can serve as a catalyst for introspection and mindfulness. It can prompt individuals to explore their inner landscapes, meditate, and seek alignment with their spiritual selves. The concept of “Nada Yoga” in Hinduism and Buddhism also emphasises the practice of focusing on inner sounds to attain higher states of consciousness, emphasising the significance of sound in our spiritual evolution.

In various spiritual disciplines worldwide, the interpretation of ringing in the ears varies. It can be seen as a call for heightened awareness, urging individuals to pay attention to their thoughts and actions. Others consider it a message urging them to realign with their spiritual path or to embrace a particular spiritual practice more consciously.

Ultimately, the spiritual significance of ringing in the ears lies in the interpretation and personal beliefs of the individual experiencing it. For some people, it may symbolise harmony and spiritual attunement, while for others, it could signify a need for self-reflection or a reminder of their spiritual journey.

Many mystical and religious faiths have used many words for this ‘divine sound current’; below are a few that can be investigated if interested in this concept:

Christianity: The Word (Logos), Holy Spirit

Hinduism: Nada, Shabd, Nam, Dhun, Om (Aum), Brahman (in the form of sound)

Sikhism: Naam, Shabad

Islam: Kun, Kalma, Kalimatullah (Word of God)

Judaism: Dabar (Hebrew for “word” or “speech”), Shekinah (Divine presence, often associated with voice or sound), Bat Kol (Voice of God)

Buddhism: Dharmakaya (Cosmic law or truth, sometimes associated with sound), Nada (Subtle inner sound heard in meditation)

Zoroastrianism: Ahura Mazda’s Word

These terms reflect the universal nature of the concept across spiritual traditions, each emphasising the idea of a divine sound or word as a creative and sustaining force in the universe.

Clear Signs You Are Experiencing Spiritual Growth

Are You a Spiritual Explorer? A Seeker of Truth
by Stephen Canning

Human beings have always ‘grown’ because some of us were willing to step into the unknown and are actually drawn to do so.

Long before maps, borders, or certainty, people moved — out of Africa, across land and sea — not knowing exactly what they would find. Some led. Others followed. And most simply trusted something inside them that said, “There is more.”

I was partly inspired to write this after watching a five-part BBC documentary, ‘Human’, which explores the evolutionary story of Homo sapiens. It highlights how early humans survived only because they were willing to seek new environments out of necessity. That same instinct to survive — and to thrive — is clearly visible throughout the animal kingdom.

Only now, the exploration is less about geography and more about self-development and spiritual development….being a spiritual explorer.

In my previous post, I explored how spiritual exploration doesn’t usually begin with beliefs or labels. It begins with a quiet feeling — a sense that the way we’ve been living, thinking, or seeing ourselves no longer quite fits. So we become seekers, seekers of a truth that has so far eluded us, but is also leading us, even ‘pulling’ us in a certain direction! (See my previous post for clarification on this: Outward Signs of Spiritual Growth (Inner Change in Everyday Life).

Along the way, for me, that exploration led me to many traditions and philosophies, such as Ascended Masters, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Kabbalah, Rosicrucianism, Sant Mat, Scientology, Eckankar, Spiritualism, and The Urantia Book. Some held my attention for a few weeks, some for months, and others for years. In the early stages, this questioning also led me through agnostic and atheist positions. Each offered insights that shaped my understanding in different ways.

Many spiritual traditions also suggest that the Divine is not concerned with religious identity at all, but with sincerity, inner practice, and love

As Charan Singh (a Sant Mat Spiritual Master) reminds us:
“Spirituality does not consist in knowing scriptures or reading books. It consists in knowing ourselves.”

What Spirituality Means to Different People

Are You ready to explore?

Early spirituality was simple and grounded. People respected nature, honoured ancestors, and sensed that life — and death — held meaning beyond what could be seen.

In modern times, spirituality has taken many forms. For some, it centres on God or devotion, for others, philosophy, psychology, or consciousness. Many think about an afterlife. Other philosophies are more focused on how to live this life well.

But beneath all of these approaches is the same question humans have always asked:
What does it mean to live wisely and truthfully, and for some, with a higher purpose?

The Inner Journey

At some point, many of us realise that the most challenging territory isn’t “out there”.

It’s inside. This is where spiritual exploration becomes real — and personal.

You begin to notice your reactions. Your fears. The stories you tell yourself. The ways you protect, defend, or hold on.
You start asking more honest questions:

Why does this affect me so strongly?

What is missing from my life?

What am I really afraid of?

Who am I – when I really think about it?

What am I searching for?

What is definitely true?

This kind of exploration isn’t always comfortable. In fact, it often brings uncertainty before it brings clarity.

Which is why Susan Jeffers’ book title still resonates: “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

Many philosophies say:
We must reach Self-Realisation before we can reach God-Realisation.

Self-Realisation Comes First

This is an important point — and one that often gets missed.
Before spiritual realisation comes self-realisation. A spiritual explorer is someone drawn to inner development and self-realisation.
Not in a grand or mystical sense — but in a very human one.
(See my previous post for clarification on this: Outward Signs of Spiritual Growth (Inner Change in Everyday Life).

It’s the gradual honesty of seeing yourself clearly:
1. noticing your conditioning
2. understanding your emotional patterns
3. recognising ego habits
4. becoming aware of unconscious reactions
5. acknowledging and accepting that we are not meant to be perfect
6. responding to situations rather than reacting
7. less judgemental of others

Without this, spirituality can easily become something we talk about rather than something we live.

As Krishnamurti said: “Self-knowledge is the beginning of wisdom.”

Charan Singh (a Sant Mat Master) echoed this same truth:
“Unless we understand ourselves, we cannot understand anything higher.”

*

What It Means to Be a Spiritual Explorer
A spiritual explorer isn’t someone with all the answers. They are someone willing to stay curious and search for a Truth that genuinely resonates with them.

They don’t rush to conclusions. They don’t cling too tightly to beliefs. Be willing to be uncertain, to be wrong, and to grow slowly.

Over time, you begin to trust inner discernment more than external validation, and you understand that confusion isn’t failure — it’s often part of the process.

As Rumi wrote: “Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.”

Your body also plays a very important role in discernment. It often signals when something is out of alignment — through fatigue, tension, anxiety, discomfort, or a general sense of unease. These signals can arise when our thoughts, attitudes, diet, exercise, or wellbeing practices are no longer supporting us.

The body rarely lies. When we learn to listen, it can help fine-tune our lifestyle and guide us back toward balance. I explore this relationship in more depth in The Language of the Chakras – Heal Your Life, where the body is viewed as a practical guide (often through the chakras) rather than something to override or ignore.

When Growth Becomes Visible
Spiritual exploration doesn’t remove life’s challenges. It changes how you meet them.

Over time, you may notice:
1. less reactivity
2. more emotional steadiness
3. fewer inner battles
4. greater acceptance
5. a quieter confidence
6. it’s easier to meditate
7. acceptance of what is

Not because life becomes easier — but because you become steadier.

As Charan Singh expressed: “Spirituality is a way of living, not something to be talked about.”

Keep Exploring

The early pioneers crossed continents without knowing the outcome. The spiritual explorer does something similar — but inwardly. Guided not by certainty, but by sincerity.

If you feel drawn to look within — not because it’s fashionable or comforting, but because something inside you is gently calling — you are already exploring. You are a seeker.

Not as someone trying to become “spiritual”. But simply as a human being, seeking truth.

For some, this journey may eventually include a teacher, mentor, guru, or guide — someone who resonates with what they are seeking.

As a Zen saying reminds us: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

"God will be fully found inside you, not outside".

The premise that, “Contentment in Life will only be found inside Yourself, not outside!”, points to the fact that true contentment, will be found only when we acknowledge and get in touch with our divine or spiritual essence which resides within us rather than being separate or external to us. It implies that the search for God or a higher power should be directed inward, exploring our own consciousness, beliefs, and connection to the divine. One of the main ways of achieving this is through meditation instructed and guided by a Spiritual Teacher/Master.

Although I use the word ‘God’, we could easily insert the word, ‘Jesus’, Allah, ‘The Creator’, ‘Yahweh’, ‘The Divine’, ‘Jehovah’, ‘Lord’, ‘Monad’ or Satnam’.

You will witness the ‘workings’ of God outside yourself in nature etc, but the real perception of God will be your personal experience within with meditation!

The ideal starting point to achieve these insights is to meditate, focusing at the Third Eye chakra, (also called the Ajna Chara, Tenth gate, Single Eye or Tisra Til), which is located between the eyebrows. This meditation ideally uses a manta to help us focus at the Third Eye to quieten the mind from external/worldly thoughts.

Meditation serves as a tool for inner exploration or enlightenment. For the mystically inclined, meditation can is a “Portal” to the Divine, or, as Rumi would say: “A Window to God”. There is much more to meditation than stress reduction!

“The body is the only real temple of the Lord, and it is only within the body that we can gain real knowledge of him. we go and look for the Lord in mosques, temples and churches that we have built ourselves instead of looking for him in God’s own temple where he is himself ever present.” Maharaj Charan Singh – Sant Mat

“The body is the temple of the living God.” Saint Paul

“We keep our religious places neat and clean and do not even let a speck of dirt lie there, we refrain from doing anything bad and hesitate to utter an unworthy word there. But the place that the Lord has himself chosen to dwell is often quite dirty and unclean.”
Maharaj Charan Singh – Sant Mat https://rssb.org/index.html

“In the center behind and above the eyes there is an aperture; on this side of it is the material world, in which we are living now; and on the other side is the astral world.” — Huzur Baba Sawan Singh

Several key aspects of ‘finding God & Contentment inside’

Inner exploration: lets engage in self-reflection, meditation, or other practices aimed at deepening our understanding of ourselves and our connection to the divine. The answers and experiences related to spirituality lie within our own consciousness, waiting to be discovered!

A personal relationship with the divine: Instead of seeking God solely through external sources, such as religious institutions, churches, mosques, temples and synagogues, the focus shifts to nurturing a personal and direct relationship with the divine. This perspective emphasizes the idea that we can experience and connect with the divine in our own unique way.

Divine omnipresence: The premise highlights the concept of divine immanence, which suggests that the divine presence permeates all aspects of creation. It implies that God is not distant or separate from the world but rather intimately intertwined with it. Recognizing this immanence can foster a sense of interconnectedness and a deeper appreciation for the spiritual dimensions of everyday life.

Guidance and intuition – inside: By looking inward, we can tap into our inner wisdom, intuition, and guidance. By connecting with the divine within ourselves we can access a source of profound insight and discernment. This inner guidance can assist us in making decisions, navigating challenges, and finding meaning and purpose in our lives.

Transcending religious boundaries: While religious traditions and practices can provide valuable frameworks for spiritual growth, we aim to transcend rigid dogmas and limitations imposed by organized religion. Spirituality is not confined to any particular belief system but rather is a universal and personal experience that can be accessed by individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Empowerment and self-realization: God resides within each of us and it is empowering, as it emphasizes the inherent spiritual potential within us. It encourages us to recognize our own divinity and cultivate qualities such as love, compassion, and wisdom. This understanding can lead to personal transformation, self-realization, and the embodiment of spiritual values in daily life.

The premise that God is found only inside oneself promotes a shift in focus from external sources to inner exploration, emphasizing personal connection, divine immanence, inner guidance, transcending religious boundaries, and individual empowerment. It encourages us to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery, ultimately seeking to uncover and nurture our own divine essence.

In the end we may realise that we are God!
